Anxiety, worry, fears and phobias

Is anxiety holding you back?

Most people know what it’s like to feel anxious, nervous or fearful, but for some, the extent to which they feel this way is crippling, and can get in the way of living a fulfilling life.

Are you a chronic worrier who can’t escape those stomach churning feelings when you think about what the future holds?

Are you painfully shy or do you feel  anxious at the prospect of meeting new people, or even engaging comfortably with those you already know?

Have you experienced the fear of being away from home (agoraphobia) and being in open spaces or crowded public places?

Are you scared of the dentist? Many people are a little nervous  of having dental work done, but for some it is a terrifying ordeal

Does  your mind freeze when you have to take a test or exam or endure a work performance appraisal or give a presentation? For some people, the thought of having to speak in public is a greater than the fear of dying.

Are you someone doesn’t really enjoy summer as much as you would like because of the wasps, bees, Maybugs, or other creepy crawlies?

Or are you scared of spiders?

Why do we feel anxious?

The response of the mind and the body to such triggers  can be extremely uncomfortable. Paradoxically, it is the brain’s way of trying to protect you from harm. The brain’s primary task is to ensure your survival, and in the presence of a perceived threat, the nervous system triggers the flight, fight or freeze response.

The physiological symptoms of these you are likely to be familiar with: increased heart rate, sweaty palms, churning tummy, etc.  This is the body preparing for a physical response. However, in today’s modern world, it is rarely a physical response that is required. Rather, we need to overcome these physical changes and restore calmness, rational thinking and good communication to resolve our situation.

The brain is a pattern matching ‘machine’ and is typically consistent in the way it responds to certain triggers. Consider a person with a spider phobia. There was likely an early trauma (possibly involving a panicky phobic parent) where the fear of spiders was ‘learned’. Subsequently, any similar encounter is going to result in a ‘match’ and triggers an automatic unwanted and irrational response.
